The History of Corsets and Bras

Whence the BRA you’re wearing today? Short course of history on all these push ups, bras, corsets and other cups which gave the modern bra.

It all began in-400 BC in ancient Greece. The women of time wear yet real Bras but rather of the lifejackets, or “mastodeton” wide strips of fabric wrapped around the bust.

Fashion is the small breasts and the androgynous look, and some girls do not hesitate to stop the growth of their breasts by compressing them in tight leather thongs.

A few centuries later, breasts are released and the hit of the middle ages is a corset laced in the back covering a Trull called bodice. This gear allows you to enhance the breasts up and leaves practically overflow the nipples (so if your grandmother calls you a Trull, you know what you have to do: unpack the goods!).

These abuses of charm cause even the publication of an edict in 1370, which States “that no woman does to support the chest, either by provision of the shirt or dress laced” and therefore condemns these ladies to have breasts that attitude for thirty years.

Then comes the era of the corset, which, although it is considered as a symbol of feminine sensuality, will imprison the body and freedom of these ladies for over five hundred years. For newbies: the corset is supposed to “sculpt” the bust by tightening the size up to highlight the hips and chest. Basically, less we breathe, the more pretty.

The first corsets are fabric reinforced wooden pieces, then metal rods, genuine harnesses alleviated gradually until the appearance of the whales in the seventeenth century.

Even though their form changes allowing more or less breathe the hips and breasts according to the times, many medical reports describe bedsores, miscarriages, deformation of the ribcage, spine, and other whatnot.

In oppressing women’s bodies, it is also their freedom of movement and their place in society who are restricted. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, height of the corset, it down very low on the hips, has braces, and encompasses the breasts. The canons of the time must be soft, pale and melancholy, to walk to small not and talk very little : the equality of the sexes, it’s apparently not for right away.

In 1889, the French Herminie Cadolle offers a more comfortable brace into two parts, one clutching the size and the other raising the chest, but the idea is deemed too libertarian and Herminie find makes a flop.

It will be the years 20, boyish silhouette and the invention of rayon (ancestor of nylon) that allow the appearance of the sheaths, which replace the corsets with running sports bra. The first bras to popularise. They first one form of banner, then separate into two cups finely frames.
They will slowly evolve during the following decades, the pointy bra of the pin-up of the fifties to the wise Beanies of the 1960s.

In 1970, it is the revolution of boobies! Remembrance of the abolition of the corset, feminists are burning mountain of bras on the public square to symbolize their sexual freedom.

But as to be a liberated woman is not so easy, the teton free fade quickly in front of Chantal Thomass, Queen of the 1980s, who will wear the BRA at its peak.Pompelup, women do blow up the silk and lace!

Hulls foam, push up, banner frames, triangles, it is now a range of shapes, materials and colors that we.
You finally have the chance to live in this era, where the (sub-) clothing fits all body shapes and tastes, and not the reverse!
